How to Remove Melted Crayon from Plastic Surfaces

crayons1

Traci asked: How do you remove melted and dried-on crayon from a car’s interior? It’s not on the upholstery, it’s on the plastic, wall part of the door.

Crayons are composed mostly of wax and coloring. The first step is to remove the wax and then treat any remaining stains from the coloring. In some cases, there may be a slight grease residue. Follow the steps below to remove all traces of the crayon from your plastic surface.

You Will Need:

  • Ice
  • Spoon or scraper
  • Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
  • Dawn dishwashing detergent
  • Sponge
  • Water

Steps to Remove the Crayon:

  1. Since the crayon does not penetrate the plastic, it should be easily scraped off once it has hardened. To get it as hard as possible, place an ice cube over the area for a few seconds, until it is cold and brittle.
  2. Quickly use the spoon or scraper to gently scrape it away from the plastic. If the plastic is textured, you may need to use a stiff-bristled brush (such as a tooth brush) instead.
  3. If a thin layer of crayon still exists on the surface, use the Magic Eraser to gently scrub it away.
  4. Sometimes with crayons, a slight grease stain remains. If this is the case, mix a small amount of Dawn dish detergent (or other grease-cutting cleaner) with water and use a sponge to scrub the grease away.
  5. Dry the area thoroughly.
  6. Repeat any of the above steps as necessary until the crayon and any stains are removed.

Additional Tips and Ideas

  • For lighter marks, such as drawings, simply wipe them away with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Avoid using too much pressure or it may scratch the surface.
