How to Clean a Wool Uniform with Cotton Patches

civilwaruniform

Monica asked: How do I clean wool with cotton patches? My husband does Civil War re-enacting. He has a wool uniform. If I sew cotton patches on it to make it look more realistic and worn, is there anything special I need to do when I clean it?

You can continue to clean the uniform as usual. Of the two materials, wool is the most sensitive and vulnerable to damage. Follow the cleaning methods and guidelines for wool, and it will clean the cotton as well. If the patches are made from new material, try placing a Shout Color Catcher (available in the laundry aisle) in the load with the uniform to keep the dyes from transferring to the wool. For cleaning information, see our guides How to Wash Wool and How to Clean Wool.
