How to Wash Cloth Diapers
Keeping cloth diapers clean is not as hard as it might sound and it certainly is less expensive than disposable diapers. First, as diapers are soiled remove any waste products in the toilet. You should have a pail with baking soda in it for storage until washing. Wash up to two dozen diapers together, anymore than that will cause piling – similar to what happens to a comforter when washed – the filling will bunch up into little balls. Wash with hot water and a gentle detergent. Use a fragrance free detergent to prevent irritation. Dry as normal or line dry.

If you are going to use a stain remover for yucky spots, try to spray it on when you put the diaper in the pail. It will have time to work before the next wash.

Washing and drying alone should remove odors but if not you can always add baking soda or vinegar to the wash.

Don’t use too much washing liquid or powder. I cut the recommended amount in half. Cloth diapers are easily susceptible to build up that will irritate your baby’s skin.

Some people use a pail of water with Borax or vinegar in it to soak the diapers before washing. Only do this if you can ensure the pail is out of the babies and other children’s reach. But it can help with stains and odors.

Line drying cloth diapers can help with stain removal and leaves diapers with a fresh, clean smell.

Fabric softeners can reduce the absorbency of cloth diapers so use it sparingly - or not at all.

Wash in hot water and rinse in cold water. The hot water will help to kill any bacteria and germs.

If a child has been sick you might consider boiling the diapers before washing. Some feel this helps reduce the spread of viruses. It is not necessary on a regular basis, though.

If you will be using your clothes dryer, dry the cloth diapers for at least 50-60 minutes to help sterilize them.

Separate your cloth diapers and the diaper covers. Don’t soak the diaper covers as it will cause the elastic to break down. Read the manufactures instructions on how to care for them.

A cold rinse with no detergent should remove most stains. Better yet, invest in a toilet mounted diaper sprayer to remove solids before putting diapers in a pail with no lid!! The absence of the lid helps the diapers to dry out and prevents bacteria growth and odor. Next wash diapers in the hottest water possible with a powdered detergent that contains enzymes like Tide. Include an extra rinse cycle to remove any excess bubbles and dry on low.
