How to Clean a Swag Lamp

Nancy asked: How do I clean a 70s swag lamp? I’m not sure of the material, but it feels like some sort of plastic or resin. It looks like fine strings were wrapped around a beach ball and sprayed with something to keep its shape once the ball was deflated.

Swag lamps come in a variety of styles and colors. For this delicate style of lamp, gentle cleaning methods are a necessity. Use the methods below to remove the dirt and dust without removing the glue that holds it together.

You Will Need:

  • Duster
  • Mild detergent
  • Water
  • Bucket
  • Soft cloths
  • Vacuum with attachments
  • Cheesecloth or old nylons
  • Rubber band

Steps to Clean the Lamp:

  1. Begin by removing surface dirt by dusting the surfaces of the lamp.
  2. Swiffer dusters will trap dirt from small creases and crevices without any rough rubbing. The surface can also be wiped down with a soft cloth.
  3. If there is a large amount of dust/dirt build-up a vacuum may be the easiest and quickest cleaning method. Cover the attachment with a nylon or cheesecloth and secure with a rubber band.  Use the vacuum to suction the dust off of the lamp.
  4. To wash off grimy areas, fill a bucket with water and add a small amount of soap.
  5. Moisten a cloth with the soapy water and wring it out thoroughly. It should be just slightly damp.
  6. Use the moistened cloth to clean any dirty areas.
  7. Do not submerse the lamp in the water as this can loosen the glues that hold it together.
  8. Rinse with a clean cloth moistened with plain water.
  9. Allow to air dry or dry with a soft cloth.

Additional Tips and Advice

  • If there are stains or dark areas, try scrubbing them gently with a soft toothbrush. A small amount of soap can be added as well to add extra cleaning power.
  • If the materials are cloth and cannot tolerate liquid, skip those steps altogether. Simply dust or vacuum the lamp thoroughly.
