Hand sanitizer contains alcohol to kill germs. Alcohol is also used to strip finishes off of wood. In this case, the white “stain” that is left is where the alcohol from the hand sanitizer has damaged the finish on the wood. Once this damage has been done, it is not possible to reverse it. It will be necessary to refinish that area of the bench. There are some wood crayons available that may work to “color” over the affected area and help it to blend in better. It may also work to apply a new layer of finish. This can replace the damaged area and help hide the discoloration.
