Someone gave me some coins he says he found on a dive off some coast somewhere from some ship he found. He says the coins are Tang Dynasty China bronze cash coins. The picture on the paper he gave me doesn't quite match what he actually gave me. The other two have stuff from the ocean all over them and I can't see the markings. Any suggestions on how to clean these coins so that I can see the markings and truly find out the information about them?

It says not to clean coins. These mercury dimes are sticky. What can I clean with that won't damage. Is soapy water okay?

Vinegar and salt are the best way to clean a penny. I used it one time and it looked liked a brand new penny shining in the sun.

Single falcon with "Lambda" serial between legs. Beautiful 221 B.C Egyptian coin, Who cares about the price in the market since is an archaeological artifact that should be studied?. With a nice Coca cola bath I was able to see "shiny" details once lost in the disgusting patina.

Now after cleaning it with enough solvents and chemicals goes shiny to the museum...

You can use ketchup to clean coins instead of vinegar. And Dr. Pepper as well.

Try not to use your best coins, it's risky, and never use metal to get out the dirt.
