Wash your fruits as soon as you bring them home. Fruits usually travel long distances under many different conditions, there is no telling where they have been or who has handled them. They will probably be stored next to other food products in your refrigerator or on your cupboard so be safe and wash them first.
Wash fruits that have peels too, like bananas. Just because you are not going to eat it does not mean that you won’t contaminate the fruit inside when you peel it.
Wash fruit in cold water. Warm water will promote bacterial growth and could actually “cook” the fruit a bit.
Place the fruit in a colander in the sink, while running water over it agitate fruit like berries. For larger fruits like apples brush the skins with a soft brush to remove dust and dirt.
Hand dry the fruit with paper towels or lay it out to air dry before putting it away.
Don’t use detergents or bleach to wash your fruit. If it is not something you would normally eat then don’t think it is safe to wash with it. The fruit can absorb the chemicals.
There are a ton of fruit and vegetable washes out there but water does just as well. If you are going to use a prepared solution make sure you rinse really well.
You can also use a mixture of vinegar and water to wash fruit. Just dip in the solution and rinse well. I have also heard of people using baking soda as a scrub, again just rinse well.
For grapes and berries you can dip and swirl them around in a bowl of cold water. More of the surface area can be gotten that way then just using a colander.
If you cannot buy Organic this recipe is Great: 1 cup water,1 cup white vinegar,1 Tablespoon baking soda,10 drops grapefruit extract.
Spray and rinse well.
