Bob asked: How do I clean a glass oven door? Our glass oven doors have a film on them that resembles oil or gasoline on water. We have tried everything to clean them without results. The film is on the outside and is not from burnt on food.
As we’re cooking, grease and oil become airborne along with steam rising from our pots and pans. It then lands on the surface of our appliances, and builds up over time into a thick film or residue that can be tough to remove. To release this film, the grease must be broken down and wiped away. Follow these steps to break through the greasy film and remove it for good.
You Will Need:
- Grease-cutting cleaner (choose one)
- Dawn Power Dissolver
- White vinegar
- Lemon juice
- Baking soda/water paste
- Cameo
- Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
- Hot water
- Sponges or soft cloths
Steps to Clean Away the Greasy Film:
- Clean the area as normal to remove any superficial dirt and dust.
- Next, apply the chosen cleaner using a sponge or soft cloth.
- Allow it set for a few minutes. (if applicable)
- Use the hot water to gently scrub the area and remove the cleaner.
- Repeat until the greasy film is removed.
- Rinse with clean water.
Additional Tips and Ideas
- There are many different cleaners that individuals have found helpful in removing this grime from the front of appliances. Cream cleaners, Sheila Shine spray, ammonia (ensure that it is not used with any bleach products) as well as auto-cleaning products have been successful in removing the film.
- Avoid using any abrasive cleaners or scratch pads on glass doors as it will cause fine scratches across the surface. These scratches are often mistaken for a film, however they cannot be removed with the above cleaners.
