How to Wash A Hat

How to wash a hat depends greatly on the kind of hat you are washing. If it is a wool winter stocking hat just lay it in a small basin of hot water for a few minutes. Then lay it in a small basin of cool water to rinse. Roll in a towel to dry, reshape and lay flat to dry. For a baseball cap made of anything but wool just toss in the washer, wash, stuff the head part to reshape and air dry.

A lot of times hats just need a spot clean. Use just us a bit of detergent or spot remover with a toothbrush. Brush the spot to remove, rinse with clear water and air dry.

If you have a hat that cannot be washed by traditional means and you don’t want to take it to the dry cleaner you can just wash the inner band with a wash cloth and detergent. Be sure to rinse well and allow to air dry.

More expensive hats like fedoras or cowboy hats can be brushed to remove a lot of what appears to be dirt.

If you get a stain on a felt hat you can try a bit of fine grain sandpaper to gently rub off the stain.

If you have a hat that has been made out of a certain type of material, to match an outfit for example. Remove all the extras to the hat, ribbon, flowers, bows, etc: and follow the washing instructions for that type of material. But do not dry in your dryer. Reshape with stuffing and allow to air dry.

Use a damp, not wet cloth with a synthetic detergent. Don’t get the straw too wet as it will go limp. Just pat and gently rub to remove dirt.
