This is how my neighbor does it for her daughter’s cornrow braids. Get your hair wet, then water down your shampoo so it’s very liquid and get it all over your scalp and the base of the braids. Rinse from the top down. You can condition the same way. Don’t get too rough with the shampooing or the braids will unravel and you’ll have to start over.

You need a removable shower head, or else one of those portable shower things that attaches to the faucet on the sink. You can do it in a regular shower, but it’s a lot easier and faster if you have a handheld to use.

You can’t wash your hair every day if you’ve got this kind of style, the kind of braids that stay in. Maybe every three or four days. And you can’t use the really slippery conditioner, because it will make your hair slide out of the braids.

My daughter braids her long hair down her back for gym. She just washes the top of her head and then rinses the braid and squeezes it out when she’s done. If the braid is loose it will come out, though, so she has to make it very compact.

Someone’s never put in cornrows - it takes forever, you don’t just take them down every day to wash your hair! I only redo mine once a week. Wash and condition it really thoroughly before the braids go in, then make sure to rinse it well with warm water every night. I don’t think my way would work for someone with really oily hair, though.

If you have a lot of braids or you’re afraid they’ll come out, just rinse through a few at a time with diluted shampoo and clean water.
