The best way is to get some sort of separate, covered container. A covered plastic ice cream bucket, a covered bucket that the kitty litter came in in the first place, or a diaper pail or other covered garbage can. Line that container with a plastic bag. Use a scooper to scoop out the clumps of litter, and deposit them into the covered container. Once you put on the lid– no odor! Do this daily. When it comes time to completely clean the litter box, empty it and scrape it with a paint scraper, then pour in some vinegar, let it sit, rinse, dry, and refill with litter. You might be able to avoid this last part if you can use cat pan liners, but we can’t use them because the cats claw them to pieces!
I clean my boxes with Dawn blue dish soap, a scouring pad and hot water. I rinse with vinegar and let them air dry. I use feline pine clumping litter. it is the consistency of sawdust and doesn’t have perfumes, dyes or clay dust (which settles in the lungs). my cats love it… i guess it reminds them of being outside.
i use the cat pan liners even though my cats claw them to shreds, i still have to use caution and a garbage bag when dumping it out but the liner still offers more protection from the bulk of the clumps and mess stuck to the box than no liner at all
Cat Litter Pan Cleaning
I have found an easy way to keep the pan cleaner, after you completely wash and dry the pan, spray generously with Pam, then put in the cat litter. Believe me nothing will stick to it. Very simple.
