You have heard it before - now teach it to your kids! Wash your hands for the length of time it takes you to sing Happy Birthday to yourself. Sing it slow and make a production out of it or sing it twice. That means just the washing part, not the rinsing and the drying part too.

There is a lot of fancy stuff out there to wash you hands with. Plain old soap and water works just fine.

Copy what you see on your favorite episode of ER. Wet your hands; apply the soap and then lather. Rub your hands together covering all surfaces, between your fingers, the backs of you hands and your wrists.

You can use the alcohol based cleaners to wash if you’re in jam but don’t overdo it and don’t rely on it solely. Cover all parts of your hands just like you would if you were actually washing them not just the palms. When you get to an area with water, wash again with soap and water.

Use an air dryer or paper towels to dry your hands not a cloth hand towel that you hang up after you are done. The cloth hand towel still holds the germs from your drying and everyone else that has used the towel. Use something that is disposable instead.

Don’t forget your nails! Whether they are long or short they are a breeding ground for hidden dirt. Invest in a little scrub brush and while you are washing your hands use the brush to lather and clean under your nails. Don’t forget to rinse the brush well. You can also throw the brush in the dishwasher once in awhile to keep it free of germs.

After you dry your hands in a public restroom use the paper towel to turn off the faucet, open the public restroom door, etc; Don’t waste your efforts by touching things the general public has touched in such a germ infested area.

Remember that not everyone washes their hands before touching these things!

Don’t just tell your younger kids to go wash their hands, they will stand at the sink holding their hands under the running water till you tell them to hurry up and that’s it. Go with them, take their hands in yours and WASH with them.

Removing germs while washing your hands is a mechanical function (temperature of the water is unimportant.) .Use plain soap and rub.
90% of the germs are removed in the first 15 seconds. Rinse well and use clean paper towels to dry.
