Whether you need to spruce up your space for a special visitor or you just want your home to feel like a stay-cation paradise throughout the week, there are lots of little tricks that can quickly take your bathroom to the next level of clean for just a few dollars or less.
Polish the Faucets
Just because your faucets are clean doesn’t mean they sparkle like they could. Whether your faucet is chrome, bronze, or stainless steel, a couple drops of cooking oil on a soft cloth can give it some extra glisten.
Fold the Toilet Paper
This is so easy to do and takes any bathroom to the next level of cleanliness. Simply fold under each corner of the end of the toilet paper to make a point and flatten the folds so they stay in place. It’s only good for one bathroom use, but you can re-fold while you go if you tear off your piece in advance. There are many other toilet paper folding techniques you can find online as well.
Rearrange the Toilet Paper
If you’re like most people, you have one roll on the holder and the rest of the bag of rolls tucked under the sink. Turn those extra rolls into a display piece that provides bathroom go-ers with the confidence of knowing they’re supplied, and the convenience of a quick roll change when needed as well. Simply pick up a small basket from a dollar store and pile in the rolls. Tie a ribbon on the basket for an extra pop of color and style, or cut a piece of colorful fabric to line the inside of the basket.
Add Some Hooks
A quick visit to the hardware store can get you some quality wall hooks for only a couple dollars. Even decorative hooks with crystal-like knobs are available for about five dollars. These are a great way to hang up a bathrobe or damp towel – or both if you have the room for multiple hooks.
Provide Refreshments
No, not beverages; refreshments for your skin, though a stack of bottled water can be a welcome addition to almost any room. Many hand soaps, particularly antibacterial ones that contain alcohol, will dry out your hands with repeated use. Put a bottle of lotion next to or tucked behind the hand soap dispenser so that washing your hands doesn’t have to leave you with dry skin. If you have the room on your counter, a body mist is a nice touch as well. You can even make your own signature scent using essential oils. Baby wipes are also a welcome supply to have available. Keep them moist by adding a bit of water to the container and consider mixing in some essential oils for an extra luxurious impression. The container can be decorated with contact paper or by removing the labels and wrapping a ribbon around the container body.
Provide Cotton Supplies
The offer of a Q-tip or cotton ball for a quick touch up makes any bathroom experience more luxurious. Not only do you get to be pampered by having a little bathroom party favor, even if you did pay for them, you also get to walk out of the bathroom even more clean than you would have without using them. A quick dab with a cotton ball to remove some summer shine from your forehead or a swipe with a swab to get your ears extra clean is an experience you can enjoy over and over again for just a few cents. Pick up some glass jars to keep the supplies readily available on the counter, and tie a ribbon around them to match your bathroom color scheme or apply some decorative stickers to the sides of the jars.
Learn Towel Folding Techniques
A towel swan on the counter is sure to make any guest feel special. Spend the afternoon online to find a folding idea that works well with your style and practice it a few times to be sure you learn the trick to it. There is usually more than one way to fold a design, so if you are having problems with one method, try looking for another. If you want your swan or other folded design to last longer than one use, lay a second towel under or next to it for regular use.
Keep the Smell Sweet
Remember the old trick of lighting a match after using the restroom (because the sulphur in the match cancels out the bathroom odors)? Make it easy on yourself and guests to achieve this effect by setting a tray with a matchbox on the back of the toilet. Adding a candle on the tray will help scent the room even without lighting it and also will provide guests with a way to be more discreet about needing to light a match. An extra candle on the sink can bring out the scent even more and function as a nice decoration as well.
Emphasize the Mirror
A mirror is just a mirror until you make it a statement piece. Pick up some accent decals, crystal stickers, or other decorative adhesives to create a border or corner design on your mirror. For a little extra, you can get a mirror framing kit from a hardware store to wrap the edges of your mirror with a wood, acrylic, or even a mirror frame.
Utilize the Light Bulbs
Whether you have a fancy light fixture or not, any light can get even more gorgeous with a specialty light bulb. Go for frosted glass if you’d like a softer look, a crystal cut bulb for extra impact, or a dipped bulb for a backlit-style glow.
Apply Wall Stickers
You could just hang a photo, but then you’d have to dust it. Instead, just apply some wall stickers with quaint phrases or quirky designs that match your bathroom’s style in the blank space above the toilet or even on the back of the bathroom door.
Think of the Kings
As much as we want the bathroom to be fit for a queen, a good queen thinks of her king as well. Full (or honorary) king? Think magazines. Little prince? Think quick children’s books. Hey, any opportunity to get them to read more, right? Grab a rectangular basket to match or complement the toilet paper roll basket and stand a variety of magazines or books in it. You can pick up some free city magazines at the grocery store or grab a few specialty interests from the magazine aisle. Dollar stores often carry a wide variety of short children’s books, and even some novelty books that you could add for your big king as well.
Additional Tips
- Need some extra wow-factor for a special guest? Grab a bud vase from a dollar store and a variety flower bouquet from a grocery store. Put the bouquet in your main living space, but take out a sprig or two for the bathroom bud vase.
- Under the cabinet a little less than organized? Some stackable drawers or caddies can conceal that mess quick, and ensure that everyone feels included with their own area for their supplies.
- Concerned about the upkeep? A tissue box can give your bathroom a decorative refreshment supply, and also provide an easy way to wipe down the sink each evening or as needed.
- Looking for some extra ideas and don’t mind spending a few bucks? Go for a personalized toilet seat, a valance in front of the shower curtain rod, or a stylish doorknob kit.

How can you clean dried hairspray off of the bathroom floor?
Melanie says
Lindy,
It depends on what type of floor you have. For most floor types (tile, linoleum, vinyl), you can use rubbing alcohol. If the residue does not easily wipe up with alcohol at first, soak a cloth with the alcohol and lay it over the hairspray residue to help it soften for a few minutes, then try scrubbing it again.
If your floor is wood, use a wood floor cleaner instead.
If you have marble or granite floors, try using a marble/granite cleaner first. If that doesn’t work, try using some mild soap, but be sure to rinse the area thoroughly with plain water afterward to remove any soap residue.
If you are unsure about whether a cleaner is safe for your specific floor, test it on a small hidden area first.
