How to Remove Berry Stains

Berries may make summer taste sweeter, but they can also leave some serious stains on your clothes. However, there are several items you likely already have that can remove a berry stain with ease.

The Lemon Method

Lemons work best on fresh berry stains. If the stain is older than a day, skip to the next method.

You Will Need:

  • Lemons or Lemon Juice

Steps to Remove the Stain:

  1. Rinse the stain with cold water.
  2. Cut a lemon into slices.
  3. Rub a lemon slice over the stain several times.¹
  4.  Squeeze the lemon slice over the stain to saturate the stain. If using lemon juice, dab the juice onto the stain.²
  5. Allow the shirt to soak until the stain fades away or the lemon juice begins to dry. Be sure to keep colored clothing out of the sun while the lemon juice soaks to avoid having the lemon juice lighten the dye color.
  6. Do not let the lemon juice dry on the garment, as the acid in the lemons can damage clothing fibers. Rinse and repeat until the stain is removed.

The Vinegar and Milk Method

Whether the stain is old or new, vinegar and milk can take that berry stain away.³

You Will Need:

  • Vinegar
  • Milk

Steps to Remove the Stain:

  1. Combine equal parts of vinegar and milk. If you don’t have both vinegar and milk, one or the other may suffice.⁴
  2. Plug the sink drain and place the garment in the sink.
  3. Pour the solution over the stained area and allow the garment to soak until the stain is gone.

The Glycerin Method

Don’t like the smell of vinegar? Try this glycerin solution instead.⁵

You Will Need:

  • Glycerin
  • Eucalyptus Essential Oil
  • Cornstarch

Steps to Remove the Stain:

  1. Apply glycerin to the berry stain.
  2. Allow the glycerin to soak for half an hour.
  3. Rinse away the glycerin and let the garment air dry.
  4. If any of the stain remains once the shirt has dried, make a thick paste with 1 teaspoon glycerin, 1 heaping tablespoon of cornstarch and 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.
  5. Apply the paste to the stain and place the stained area in the sun to dry.
  6. Rinse the paste from the stain once it has dried and repeat applications of the paste until the stain is removed.

Additional Tips and Advice

  • Although most people buy Wine Away to remove red wine stains, the cleaner can also be effective at removing the red stains from strawberries, raspberries or cranberries.⁶
  • Washing clothes with Borax could also remove the stain.⁷

I use liquid soap and vinegar. I alternate between the two. Color changes from blue to red and back, and disappears gradually.
