Gay asked: We have just had a new radiator fitted in our bedroom which has a brand new cream, acrylic carpet. There is a greenish stain on the carpet where a new copper pipe has been fitted, so I think the stain has come from the copper. Any ideas what product I should use to remove said stain. Thank you in advance.

It is likely that the green stain is left from some tarnish on the copper piping. To remove the stain, it will require a weak acid to remove the tarnish. Once the tarnish is loosened, it can be removed from the carpet fibers.

Vinegar Method

You Will Need:

  • Vinegar
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Soft cloths
  • Water
  • Vacuum

Steps to Remove the Stain:

  1. Mix one part flour with one part salt.
  2. Add enough white vinegar to form a paste.
  3. Spread the paste over the stained area.
  4. Work it into the fibers of the carpet.
  5. Allow the paste to set on the stain until it dries.
  6. Vacuum away the dried paste.
  7. Moisten a soft cloth with water and blot the remaining paste away.
  8. Blot with a dry cloth to remove any excess moisture.
  9. Allow the area to air dry.
  10. Repeat if necessary.

Using Chemical Cleaners

You Will Need:

  • Ammonia
  • OxiClean
  • Rust remover
  • Water
  • Soft cloths

Steps to Remove the Stain:

  1. Moisten a soft cloth with the chosen cleaning product.
  2. Blot the stained area until moistened, do not allow it to become saturated.
  3. Allow the cleaning substance to set on the stain for a few minutes.
  4. Blot with a clean cloth moistened with plain water to rinse.
  5. Last, blot with a dry cloth and allow the area to air dry completely.

Additional Tips and Advice

  • There are products available from pool supply stores that are designed to remove copper. Check the labels to ensure they are safe to use on your particular carpeting.
  • Always test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure there are no unwanted effects to the carpet coloring or texture.
