How to Remove Limescale from a Washing Machine Soap Tray

Daren asked: How do I clean the soap tray of a washing machine? It is covered with hard water limescale.

Limescalefront-load-washer and hard water deposits can easily be removed with a simple acid. In this case, the challenge will be getting to the problem.  If the tray is removable, it will be easy to accomplish by taking it out and soaking it in a bowl or sink. However, if the tray cannot be removed, more creative techniques will need to be employed. In these cases, we recommend saturating a cloth with the acid mixture and laying it on top of the affected areas. It can then be removed once the limescale has softened so it can be scrubbed or wiped away. The materials and process are simple and can be found in our guide How to Remove Limescale.

I have hard water stains and soap scum on my phony marble shower surround. The manufacturer said to only clean with Dawn dishwashing liquid. This does not work. I hoped I could find an answer about how to clean this without destroying the shine. I’m afraid of the acids because he acted like I would really harm the finish if I used them.
