Michelle asked: How do I remove sticky tape marks from my marble table?
Tape can leave a sticky residue on any surface that can seem like quite a nuisance to remove. Here are the steps to quickly and safely remove this “sticky situation” from your marble piece.
You Will Need:
- Talcum powder
- Vegetable oil
- WD-40
- Soft cloths
- Vacuum (optional)
Steps to Remove the Sticky Residue:
- The first step in removing the sticky residue is to either dry it out or lubricate it so that it can be removed easily.
- To dry it out, sprinkle the area with talcum powder.
- Rub the powdered adhesive with a soft cloth. The powder should cause it to “ball up” when it is rubbed making it easy to remove. Simply brush or vacuum the rubbings away as they are removed from the surface.
- If there is no talcum powder available, apply vegetable oil or WD-40 to the area and allow it to set for a minute.
- Wipe the adhesive away with a clean, soft cloth.
- Clean the area immediately with a marble cleaner to prevent a grease stain from developing.
Additional Tips and Ideas
- Some marble pieces are very valuable. If you are uncomfortable cleaning it yourself, do not hesitate to consult a professional for stain removal.

We had foam bumpers on the marble edges of our fireplace hearth – for over 10 years (worried husband). It was held on with sticky Velcro. The Velcro peeled off easy enough. The WD-40 worked faster than the vegetable oil, though the oil may have been as effective if I had more patience. I did use a razor scraper to get off the bulk of the glue and a soft cloth rubbing to remove the residue. The black marble looks perfect. Thanks!

I have marble surrounding my fireplace, which had tape residue from Christmas. We used WD-40, waited a few minutes, washed with soapy water using some minor scrubbing and off the sticky stuff went. Thank you for the tip!

I had a cat seat attached to a marble window sill for eight years. It was suppose to stay stable with wall braces that merely tightened and didn’t go into the wall. It didn’t hold very well; at the time it started falling, my cat weighed 6 lbs and is now 8. To get it to hold I used industrial strength sticky Velcro. It worked really well, but upon removal today there was as enormous amount of Velcro sticky substance on the marble. Tried your suggestions without success. Then I tried hand sanitizer. Apply generously, let it sit, and then remove excess by blotting with a cloth then with a blunt object, I used a butter knife, gently push and pry. The goo will come up in a ball in sections. It is an arduous task but worked completely. I think the WD-40 didn’t work because the ‘glue’ was very thick. Hope this helps someone.

I used nail polish remover, which dissolved the sticky in seconds. Did not try the WD-40.
