Stephanie asked: How do I clean a toilet bowl brush? I would like to know the best (non-toxic) way to clean a toilet bowl brush. I have one that sits in a little container and is rather dirty. Thank you!

The toiletbrushtoilet bowl brush sees some of the nastiest cleaning in the house, so it’s no doubt that it needs to be cleaned and disinfected as well. Here are two ways to clean and disinfect your toilet bowl brush. One is easy, one is eco-friendly. Both will remove odors and stains needed to keep your brush in top cleaning condition.

Bleach Cleaning Method

You Will Need:

  • Bleach
  • Hot water
  • Bucket

Steps to Clean the Brush:

  1. Fill a bucket half full with hot water (the hotter the better).
  2. Add two cups of bleach to the water.
  3. Place the toilet brush into the bleach water and allow it to soak for at least one hour. Soak it longer if needed.
  4. Once clean, remove from the water, rinse with clean water and allow it to dry completely.
  5. If desired, this cleaning method can be completed right in the toilet (without the hot water). Simply pour bleach into the toilet bowl. Place the brush in the bowl and let it sit for several hours. You’ll have a clean brush and toilet bowl!

Eco-Friendly Method

You Will Need:

  • Washing soda
  • Bucket
  • Water

Steps to Clean the Brush:

  1. Fill a bucket half full with water.
  2. Add 2-3 cups of washing soda crystals to the water.
  3. Place the toilet brush into the mixture and allow it to soak for several hours. Remove the brush to see if it is clean. If needed, add more crystals (another 1/3 -1/2 cup). Soak it longer if needed.
  4. Once the brush is clean, remove it from the water, rinse and allow it to dry completely.
  5. If desired, this method can also be completed directly in the toilet. Simply pour the crystals into the toilet bowl. Place the brush in the bowl and let it sit for several hours. Although this method is gentler, it is still effective with additional time.

Additional Tips and Advice

  • Washing soda crystals are 100% natural and biodegradable. Although the bleach method works faster, this eco-friendly option is as effective.
