Choosing and Using Disinfectant Wipes

wipes

Shelley asked: What cleaning/disinfecting wipe is safe for the inside of microwaves? I am looking for a cleaning/disinfecting wipe that can be used every day on kitchen countertops and the inside/outside of appliances.

You’re in luck! With the increased awareness of food bacteria and its dangers, there are a wide variety of wipes available on the market. Many of them are designed for frequent cleanings of kitchen surfaces, because it’s an area of the home with many opportunities for bacteria growth. You can choose if you’d like them to have a scent, bleach or other features. Here are a few that are safe to use daily as well as inside of appliances (as they dry, the disinfecting liquids evaporate leaving them safe to use without rinsing).

Disinfectant Wipes

  • Clorox Disinfecting Wipes
  • Lysol Disinfecting Wipes
  • Sani-Wipes

ABC News released an article on the appropriate use of disinfectant wipes to ensure they are effective. Follow some of these tips to ensure that your cleaning efforts are helpful and not harmful.

  • Only use each wipe on one surface or area to avoid spreading germs and bacteria from one section to the other.
  • Allow the disinfecting liquid to sit for 30 seconds on hard, non porous surfaces to disinfect and up to 4 minutes to sanitize.
  • Dispose of wipes after use. Do NOT reuse wipes.
  • These wipes work well along with normal cleaning methods. They are not meant to replace normal cleaning procedures.
