Bamboo flooring is very sensitive; it can easily be dented or scratched, and it should not come in contact with any moisture. This is one type of flooring that requires a no-shoes policy in the house. If your bamboo floor does need cleaning, follow the steps below.¹

Cleaning the Floor

You Will Need:

  • A dusting broom
  • Dish liquid
  • Water
  • A cloth
  • White vinegar

Steps to Clean the Floor:

  1. Dry mop the floor to remove any dust using a flat, cotton, dry mop or dusting broom as needed.²
  2. If there are any dried spills or other spots on the floor that need to be removed, mix some mild dish liquid with water to make suds. Moisten a soft cloth with the soapy water, then wring the cloth out so it it only damp, not dripping. Spot clean the floor with the damp cloth, then wipe the area dry with a towel.¹
  3. If there are any areas on the floor that need a more thorough cleaning, spray a soft cloth with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water, and wipe the area. Then, pat the area dry with a towel.²

Additional Tips and Advice

  • Always wipe up a spill on a bamboo floor right away. Any standing water on the floor can cause it to swell or warp.²
  • Never clean a bamboo floor by wet mopping.²
  • You can also sweep or vacuum a bamboo floor, but be very careful with the vacuum as it could track in dirt on the wheels or cause a dent if it falls over accidentally.²
  • Sunlight can fade a bamboo floor. Be sure to cover any windows with curtains.¹
  • Put felt pads under the feet or corners of all furniture in a room that has bamboo floors to prevent scratches.¹
