Keeping your room AC unit clean helps it to work more efficiently. Follow the steps below to give your air conditioner a thorough cleaning.¹

Cleaning the Window Unit

You Will Need:

  • A screwdriver
  • Dish liquid
  • Water
  • A vacuum
  • A fine comb
  • A cloth
  • A bristle brush
  • Wire

Steps to Clean the Window Unit:

  1. Unplug the AC unit.¹
  2. Remove the front panel either by unscrewing it or popping it off, depending on how your unit is built.¹
  3. Take out the filter. If it is replaceable or very dirty, consider replacing it. If the filter is washable, wash it with dish liquid and warm water.¹ If the filter is not washable, carefully vacuum it with a handheld vacuum.²
  4. Use a vacuum hose or attachment to vacuum all surfaces possible.¹
  5. Allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it in the unit.¹
  6. If any of the metal fins are bent, straighten them with a fin comb, which can be purchased at an appliance store or home center.¹
  7. Go outside and brush off any dust on the exterior of the unit or in the grill. This will help to keep the filter cleaner for longer.²
  8. Unscrew one of the panels on the unit that is outside, and remove any leaves and other debris that have fallen into the unit.³
  9. If you can access the metal fan blades, wipe them with a damp cloth.²
  10. Check that the holes in the drain pan and the drain tubes are free of debris. If they are clogged, use a piece of wire to clear them out.³
  11. Some window units fit into a casing that holds open the window. If your unit has this casing, remove the unit a few times per year and wipe out any leaves or twigs that have gathered in the casing.²

Additional Tips and Advice

  • The filter should be cleaned in spring and each month the unit is in use.¹
  • Never clean the coils with anything other than water.²
  • Be careful when vacuuming the coils. They can easily be bent out of shape.²
  • Older units may need to be oiled. Consult your appliance guide book to see if your unit needs to be oiled annually. If you no longer have the book, call the company or try to find the guidebook online. Most newer units no longer require lubrication.⁴
