How to Remove Dog Nose Stains from Blinds

Question: “I need to know how to clean verticals that have been soiled by a dog looking in between the ‘strips’.”

Dogs must look out the window to ensure their home is protected from all squirrels and postmen that mistakenly think they are welcome. Although good for keeping the house safe, this can quickly lead to nose prints on the glass and stains on blinds. Here’s how to remove the stains from fabric, vinyl or wood blinds so your four-legged friend can get back to guarding the yard.

The Enzyme Method

For fabric blinds, test this method in a small hidden area first to look for any adverse reaction such as water stains. If you get water stains, use the guide How to Remove Water Stains from Fabric Blinds.

You Will Need:

  • An enzyme cleaner (see more info in Step 1 below)
  • A cloth
  • Paper towels
  • Water

Steps to Remove the Stains:

  1. Enzyme cleaners are available in the pet aisle of most supermarkets, as well as at pet supply stores. Some common brands are Nature’s Miracle and Kids ‘N’ Pets. Get one that is the right type for the material of your blinds. For solid/hard blinds, use one like Nature’s Miracle Hard Surface Cleaner. For fabric blinds, use a cleaner intended for upholstery or carpet, such as Kids ‘N’ Pets Instant All-Purpose Stain & Odor Remover.
  2. Spray a small amount of the cleaner onto a cloth, enough that the cloth is damp.
  3. Press the damp cloth onto the stained area, enough to wet it.
  4. Wait a couple (1-2) minutes for the cleaner to work, then press a paper towel onto the area to soak up the moisture and stain.
  5. Repeat this process as many times as needed to remove the stain.
  6. If the stain is stubborn, turn the nozzle selection on the cleaner spray bottle to ‘Stream’ and spray the stain directly. This method may lead to more clean-up from the overspray, but the force of the stream setting will help to get deep into the stain so it can be removed. Wait a couple minutes for the cleaner to work, then blot up as much moisture as possible.
  7. This pricess can be repeated as many times as needed.
  8. When the stain is gone and you have soaked up as much moisture as possible, wet a cloth with water only and wring it out so it is only damp, not dripping.
  9. Wipe the damp cloth over the area to remove any residue that may remain from the cleaner.

The Baking Soda Method

You Will Need:

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • A bowl
  • A dustpan
  • A vacuum or brush

Steps to Remove the Stains:

  1. If you can, pull the blinds up first so the stained section is up out of your dog’s reach.
  2. Mix some baking soda with water in a bowl to make a thick paste that is about the consistency of toothpaste or peanut butter.
  3. Spread a generous (thick) amount of the paste over the stains.
  4. Leave the paste on the stains until it dries. If you were not able to pull the blinds up out of your dog’s reach, wrap plastic wrap around each blind slat to contain the baking soda. This will increase the amout of time it takes for the baking soda to dry though, so remove the plastic wrap whenever possible.
  5. Once the paste has dried, hold a dust pan beneath the slat and remove the dried paste with a brush or vacuum hose. Keep in mind that vacuuming baking soda can lead to a build-up of the powder in some machines.
  6. Repeat the process as many times as needed.

Additional Tips:

  • If the stain is only in one area of the blind, consider wrapping each of the blind panels most commonly effected with a piece of plastic wrap to prevent them from becoming stained again.
  • This same method can also be used on the strings of the blinds.
