Jennifer asked: How do I clean mosquito netting? I have this beautiful mosquito net with beads over my bed, but it is a dust collector. I want to wash it, but I don’t want to tear it up. How would you recommend washing this material? Should it be washed at all? It’s brown and I don’t want to lose the color.

Mosquito netting can be extremely handy when dealing with the little outdoor pests, or a beautiful accent to your home. Keeping the netting clean is essential to its proper function. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Wash Decorative Mosquito Netting

If your mosquito netting is used for decorative purposes and contains extra designs and beads, follow these directions.

You Will Need:

  • Warm water
  • Laundry detergent
  • Towels

Steps to Wash Decorative Netting:

  1. Decorative netting requires more care so that the beading and design work do not pull on the mesh and cause damage.
  2. Begin by filling the sink or tub with water and mixing in a small amount of laundry detergent.
  3. Agitate the water slightly until suds begin to form.
  4. Gently place the netting into the water.
  5. Allow it to soak for a few minutes to loosen any dirt or dust build-up.
  6. Next, gently agitate the netting in the water. Do not use too much force as that may cause the netting to tear.
  7. Remove the netting and drain the soapy water. The water can be gently squeezed out, but avoid wringing it as that will stretch it and can change the shape.
  8. Fill the sink or tub again with clean water.
  9. Place the netting in the clean water to rinse it.
  10. After the soap has been rinsed, remove the netting. Again, squeeze it gently, but do not wring it out.
  11. Place the wet netting between two soft towels.
  12. Carefully press on the netting to remove the excess water. Mosquito netting is so thin that most of the water will be absorbed by towels.
  13. To allow it to dry completely, it can be spread out over clean, dry towels or even draped across a large piece of furniture such as the couch or bed.
  14. When it is completely dry, it is ready to be reinstalled.

How to Wash Outdoor Mosquito Netting

You Will Need:

  • Washing machine
  • Laundry detergent
  • Towels

Steps to Wash Outdoor Netting:

  1. Carefully shake out as much dirt from the netting as possible.
  2. Place the netting in the machine with the appropriate amount of laundry detergent.
  3. Wash the netting using the gentle cycle with warm wash and cold rinse.
  4. When the cycle is complete, lay the netting out on towels or outside and allow it to dry completely.

Additional Tips and Ideas

  • These are general guidelines that apply to most mosquito nettings. If your particular netting came with different care instructions, follow those guidelines.
  • If the decorative netting has beads or other decorations that are glued on, avoid soaking it in water as it may cause the glue to loosen. For these types, consult the care instructions or contact the manufacturer for instructions.
